What is also interesting is the Synagogue of Beracha Veshalom Vegmiluth Hasidim – the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the United States. Located within the hills and not far from the heart of Charlotte Amalie, a Government House has been the centre of government in St. Thomas since the 1860’s. Visitors who are interested in seeing St. Thomas’s political life and historical background may opt to tour the building’s first two floors. Then there are also the 99 Steps made by bricks that were once used as ballast on British and Danish ships. And as of now those steps have been built into the hillside to keep the orderly grid of the city beautiful and intact.
